Taipei, Taiwan, 11 November 2001 - VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of core logic chipsets, microprocessors, and multimedia and communications chips, today announced the development of a Tablet PC reference design. A compact, high performance computer with an innovative ‘digital ink’ system, VIA’s Tablet PC reference design forms a natural evolution of the laptop and is a key element in the VIA corporate vision of ‘Total Connectivity’.

Weighing less than today’s laptops, the VIA Tablet PC reference design is an intuitive product with universal applications for meeting the needs of business users at any time and place. At the heart of the system is the acclaimed VIA C3™ EBGA processor with its low power consumption and efficient heat dissipation features, enabling longer battery life and quiet performance. It also features the VIA ProSavage PN133 integrated mobile chipset, incorporating proven 2D/3D graphics capabilities, for even lower power consumption.

The VIA Tablet PC prototype has a 10.4” electro-magnetic digitizer screen in portrait mode, wireless connectivity and communications capabilities for the latest IEEE 1394 and USB standards to enhance the productivity of the Tablet PC, while the pen-driven user interface maintains the simplicity of writing, moving away from the dependence of the keyboard.

The VIA Tablet PC reference design will be powered by Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, optimized for ease of use with special features including support for the digital ink concept and enhanced handwriting recognition.

“We are delighted that VIA Technologies, Inc. has joined us in our quest to bring the Tablet PC concept running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition to market,” said Alexandra Loeb, General Manager of the Tablet PC at Microsoft Corporation. “We are confident that the Tablet PC concept represents the next evolution of the laptop PC, providing the capability to work with digital ink to portable PC customers everywhere.”

“The VIA Tablet PC reference design bridges the gap between PC and notepad,” said Richard Brown, Director of Marketing at VIA Technologies, Inc. “We are excited to be working with Microsoft on the development of this stylish yet functional computer that has such huge market potential.”
