Physical layer communications chip brings high speed 1394
connectivity and power efficiency to high bandwidth peripherals and consumer
electronics.
Taipei, Taiwan, 3 December 2001 - VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of core logic chipsets, microprocessors, and multimedia and communications chips, today announced the latest addition to its growing line of IEEE 1394 solutions with the launch of the VIA VT6302 2-port physical layer.
Bringing the benefits of compatibility, simplicity and flexibility to PC systems and peripheral devices, the VIA VT6302 PHY supports both the IEEE 1394-1995 and the enhanced IEEE 1394a 2.0 peer-to-peer interconnect standards for the high performance serial bus.
Two fully 1394a compliant ports enable dual hot-pluggable peripheral connections running simultaneously with data transfer rates of up to 400Mbps. Combined with a link layer in consumer electronics devices such as digital video recorders and cameras, the VIA VT6302 is ideal for bandwidth-hungry multimedia applications. The VIA VT6302 can also be combined with an IDE bridge for fast storage access for external storage disk drives, allowing rapid data transfer with the high volume isochronous signal. The VIA VT6302 also offers full 1394 functionality in PC systems when combined with a South Bridge with integrated link layer.
“The VIA VT6302 PHY chip affords system builders and consumer
electronics manufacturers greater flexibility in integrating 1394 connection
technology into their products,” commented Richard Brown, Director of Marketing
at VIA Technologies, Inc. “VIA is fully committed to the development of IEEE
1394 technology as the primary interface for the home entertainment and
Information Appliance market, and in this way the VIA VT6302 contributes another
building block to VIA’s Total Connectivity strategy.”
VIA VT6302 Power Management System
The VIA VT6302 PHY incorporates several power
efficiency features that conserve energy in battery-powered and low power
applications, including suspend/resume capability, a device power-down feature
and port disabling for inactive port. Also, the cable ports monitor line
conditions for active connections to remote nodes. Using a single 3.3V power
supply, the VIA VT6302 helps maximize battery life in peripheral devices and
reduces power consumption in PC systems.
VIA VT6302 Pricing and Availability
The VIA VT6302 physical layer is available now; please contact VIA for further
information on pricing. A PCB reference design and a 1394 to IDE evaluation
board are available.
